Sensex ekes out 42-pt gain, breaks 2-day losing streak; Asian Paints surges 8%

Domestic equity benchmarks ended a volatile session on Friday nearly unchanged as buying interest in FMCG counters was offset by selling pressure in auto, metal and PSU bank names.

The S&P BSE Sensex index ended 41.75 points or 0.09 per cent higher at 48,732.55, managing to end a two-day losing streak. The broader NSE Nifty 50 benchmark settled at 14,677.80, down 18.70 points or 0.13 per cent from its previous close.

On NSE, all sectors finished the day in the red, except the FMCG gauge, which rose 2.13 per cent. Nifty Auto fell 2.03 per cent, Nifty Metal 3.76 per cent and Nifty PSU Bank 2.03 per cent.

Coal India was the worst hit among 34 laggards in the Nifty50 universe, ending 4.43 per cent lower. Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Hindalco, IndusInd Bank and Grasim were among other top losers.

On the other hand, Asian Paints was the top gainer, finishing the day up 8.44 per cent. The stock jumped after the paint maker reported an increase in quarterly profit and was the top boost to the Nifty.

UPL, ITC, Nestle, L&T and HUL were among other gainers.

Data released on Wednesday showed inflation in the country eased to a three-month low in April. However, analysts warned that lockdowns risk creating supply bottlenecks that could fuel price pressures in the coming months.
