Nifty today: Sensex rises among buying interest in power and utility stocks, Nifty tests 15,750

Domestic equity benchmarks started Tuesday’s session on a flat note amid buying interest in power and utility stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex index rose as much as 104 points to touch 52,432.43 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty 50 benchmark climbed to as high as 15,778.80.

TechM was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up 1.38 per cent. NTPC, Wipro,

and HCL Tech were among other blue-chip top performers.

On the other hand, SBI Life was the top laggard, down 1.53 per cent. Hindalco, Tata Steel, Shree Cements, were among other losers.

Equities in other Asian markets edged higher as as investors continued to weigh optimism about economic recovery. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up by 0.27 per cent.

Overnight on Wall Street, the three benchmark indices ended mixed. Dow Jones ended 0.36% lower to 34,630.24, while S&P500 declined 0.08% to 4,226.62. Nasdaq climbed 0.49% to 13,881.72

Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices were down in early trade with Brent futures falling 11 cents, or 0.2%, at $71.38 a barrel by 0151 GMT, after declining 0.6% overnight. US oil was off by 13 cents, or 0.2%, at $69.10 a barrel, having dropped by 0.6% in the previous session.
