Nifty today: Sensex gains 250 pts, Nifty tops 15,800; Power Grid rises 2%

New Delhi: Domestic equity benchmarks started Friday’s session on a strong note amid buying interest in financial and IT stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex index rose as much as 266 points to touch 52,566.76 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty50 benchmark climbed to as high as 15,816.30, up 79 points from its previous close.

was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up 2.40 per cent. Coal India, Hindalco, and JSW Steel were among other blue-chip top performers.

On the other hand, Tech Mahindra was the top laggard, down 0.50 per cent. Wipro, Divi’s Lab, and Britannia were among other losers.

Equities in other Asian markets were trading mostly higher in early trade. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up by 0.37 per cent.

Overnight on Wall Street, the three benchmark indices ended higher as economic data appeared to support the Federal Reserve’s assertion that the current wave of heightened inflation will be temporary. Dow Jones ended 0.06% higher at 34,466.24. S&P500 index climbed 0.47% to 4,239.18, while Nasdaq advanced 0.78% to 14,020.33.

Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices trimmed some gains with Brent futures down 23 cents, or 0.3%, to $72.29 a barrel. WTI crude futures slipped 22 cents, or 0.3%, to $70.07 a barrel.
