Purohit, who has over 25 years of experience across the banking and financial services sectors, was most recently the CIO at Yes Bank. Prior to this, he also held positions at RBL Bank, Barclays Bank and JP Morgan Chase. As CIO of Wipro, Purohit will report to chief operating officer Sanjeev Singh, the company said in a statement.
“As enterprises reposition themselves and aggressively move towards digital technologies, the role of the CIO in driving transformation has become more significant and complex. I am pleased to welcome Anup and am confident his industry experience will add immense value to the team,” said Sanjeev Singh, COO at Wipro.
At Yes Bank, Purohit was focused on transforming the way the bank utilised technology, with a clear focus on adoption of the cloud, open source technology, analytics and machine learning. Even in his previous roles he has been focused on building agile, robust, scalable and resilient technology platforms and processes.
“I am excited with the opportunity of joining Wipro and playing a role in the transformation journey,” Purohit said.
Purohit’s appointment comes after a massive leadership churn at Wipro which started after CEO Thierry Delaporte rejigged the organisation structure. The restructuring is estimated to have resulted in over 75 senior VPs and VPs, and 300 general managers exiting the company, according to a TOI report.
Wipro’s new structure which came into effect at the start of this year has only four strategic market units and two global business lines. In its earlier structure, Wipro had over 24 leaders, seven strategic business units, service lines and nine geographies.
