India’s airlines introduce discounted fares

Indian carriers have announced a fresh slew of discounted ticket fares to bolster demand in the lean travel season.
and AirAsia India are offering tickets at prices as low as Rs 914.

AirAsia is selling Imphal-Kolkata at base fares starting Rs 914, Bengaluru-Hyderabad from Rs 1,414, Bengaluru-Goa starting Rs 1,614, Bhubaneswar-Kolkata starting Rs 1,714 and Pune-Bengaluru starting Rs 1,714. IndiGo has fares starting Rs 914.

The fares are valid for purchase between August 4 and 6 for travel between September and end March 2022.

The government has capped both upper and lower limits for fares to prevent undercutting or fleecing in terms of ticket prices. The cap is till August end.

Flash sales, a regular feature of India’s carriers, haven’t been introduced this year, due to the government’s caps. In June, Vistara announced discounted fares which was followed by its peers.

A senior travel company executive said queries have risen 50% since yesterday and will most likely convert to a spike in ticket sales.

Indian air travel demand has been severely impacted by the Covid19 pandemic, firm rules from central and state governments for air travellers and fear of infections.

Consultant CAPA-Centre for Aviation has estimated Indian domestic traffic at 80-95 million for FY22, up 53% on year but lower than 140 million in FY19.
