sensex and nifty today: Sensex falls in early trade, Nifty tests 16,550; Nelco drops 4%, Canara Bank 2%

NEW DELHI: Domestic equity benchmarks started Tuesday’s session on a weak note amid selling pressure in financials and IT stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex index fell as much as 167 points to touch 55,415.63 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty50 benchmark fell to as low as 16,516.60, down 46 points from its previous close.

was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up 2.13 per cent. Tata Consumer, Sun Pharma, Power Grid and Cipla were among other blue-chip top performers.

On the other hand, HDFC Bank was the top laggard, down 1.07 per cent. ICICI Bank, , and Eicher Motor were among other losers.

Nelco dropped 4 per cent, while Canara Bank fell 2 per cent in early trade.

Equities in other Asian markets fell in early trade. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down by 0.45 per cent.

Overnight on Wall Street, the three benchmark indices settled higher. Dow Jones climbed 0.31% to 35,625.40, while S&P 500 gained 0.26% to 4,479.71. Nasdaq declined 0.20% to 14,793.76

Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices rose with Brent futures up 13 cents, or 0.2%, at $69.64 a barrel by 0055 GMT, after falling 1.5% on Monday. US oil climbed by 14 cents, or 0.2%, to $67.43 a barrel, having lost 1.7% the previous day.
