maruti suzuki: Electrical glitch forces Maruti to make its largest ever recall involving over 1.8 lakh cars

will be proactively recalling over 180,000 cars due to potential electrical defects in what would be one of the largest ever product recalls in terms of volume in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

The company will recall 181,754 units of the petrol variants of Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and XL6 manufactured between 4th May 2018 to 27th October 2020 for a possible defect.

The replacement of the faulty part will begin from the first week of November, the company said. In the meanwhile, the company has advised customers to avoid driving in waterlogged areas or directing a water spray towards the electrical and electronic components of their vehicles.

The company said that affected vehicles owners will be contacted by authorised workshops.

Automakers the world over recall vehicles to fix faulty components that could jeopardise public safety. The defects could come to notice of automakers following customer complaints or internal findings. The Indian government has passed a mandatory vehicle recall policy from April this year that stipulates a maximum number of customer complaints following which an automaker must recall vehicles to fix the problem.

This is the largest recall for Maruti Suzuki so far, as per data from the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM). The company had earlier recalled almost 135,000 units of WagonR and Baleno in July 2020.

The largest recall for cars in India so far was by Volkswagen and Skoda in 2016, involving over 285,000 units for a software update in their diesel engines, SIAM data show. This was after it was discovered that the company installed software on its vehicles to cheat emissions tests.
