Sensex and Nifty today: Sensex falls in early trade, Nifty50 below 17,350; RIL, HCL Tech drop 1% each

NEW DELHI: Domestic equity benchmarks started Monday’s session on a weak note amid selling pressure in RIL and select bank and IT stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex index fell as much as 213 points to touch 58,091.65 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty50 benchmark dropped to as low as 17,313.25, down 56 points from its previous close.

was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up 1.70 per cent. HDFC, Coal India, Airtel and were among other blue-chip top performers.

On the other hand, RIL was the top laggard, down 1.42 per cent. ICICI Bank, HCL Tech, Motors and were among other losers.

Equities in other Asian markets dropped in early trade. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down by 0.977 per cent.

On Wall Street, the three benchmark indices settled lower. Dow Jones tanked 0.78% to 34,607.72, while S&P 500 declined 0.77% to 4,458.58. Nasdaq plunged 0.87% to 15,115.49

Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices gained with Brent futures up 48 cents, or 0.7% to $73.40 a barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also added 49 cents, or 0.7%, to $70.21 a barrel. Both markets were at their highest since Sept. 3 earlier in the session.
