Do keep in mind that your mobile number must be registered in the UIDAI’s records to be able to use this update service. If the mobile number it not registered, then you will be required to visit the Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment/Update Centre.
Follow the steps below to update name, gender and date of birth in your Aadhaar card online:
Step 1: Visit www.uidai.gov.in
Step 2: Click on ‘Update Demographics Data Online’ under ‘My Aadhaar’ tab.
Step 3: A new tab will open on your screen. Click on ‘Proceed to Update Aadhaar’.
Step 4: You will be required to enter your Aadhaar number and captcha code. Click on OTP. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to proceed further. The OTP received via SMS on your mobile phone is valid for 10 minutes only.
Step 5: Click on ‘Update Demographics Data’. Select the options you want to update. You will be required to upload the documents as well. For instance, in case of name you will be required to submit a scanned copy of proof of identity such as PAN, Passport etc. In case of date of birth, a scanned copy of date of birth would be required such as Passport etc, PAN, birth certificate etc. In case of gender updation, no documents are required to be uploaded.
You will be required to enter the details and upload the valid document. The size of scanned document should not be more than 2 MB and format of the document should be either JPEG, PNG or PDF. Do keep in mind that both the sides of the document. i.e., front and back page must be scanned such as in case of passport, Voter ID etc.
Step 6: Once the documents are uploaded and correct details are entered, you will be redirected to make the payment.
Once the payment is made, an update request number (URN) will be generated. You can download your acknowledgement copy as well.
Charges for updation
As per office memorandum dated April 21, 2021, demographic update such as updation in name, gender, mobile number etc is charged at Rs 50. Further, updation of more than one field on single instance will be considered as one update. For example, if you update your name and date of birth together, then you will be required to make a payment of Rs 50.
Other things to remember
As per the UIDAI website, an Aadhaar card holder can update his/her name only twice in their lifetime. Do keep in mind that these are the instances when name in Aadhaar can be changed:
- Spell correction and should be phonetically the same
- Sequence change
- Short form to full form
- Name change after marriage
The gender can be updated only once in a lifetime and date of birth can be changed only once in a life time subject to the condition that the date of birth presently mentioned in UIDAI details is declared/approximate.
Checking status of updation
After submission, an Aadhaar card holder can check the status of the updation on the UIDAI website. Follow the steps below to check the status of the updation request submitted.
Step 1: Click on ‘Check Online Demographics Update Status’ under ‘My Aadhaar tab’.
Step 2: Enter your Aadhaar number, captcha code and click on ‘Send OTP’. A 6-digit one-time password will be sent to your registered mobile number.
Step 3: Enter the OTP and click on ‘Check Status’.
