Shares of Ashok Leyland (down 3.73 per cent), Mahindra & Mahindra (down 3.66 per cent), Bajaj Auto (down 3.23 per cent), Hero MotoCorp (down 3.17 per cent) and Bharat Forge (down 1.92 per cent) were the top losers in the index.
While Motherson Sumi Systems (up 0.91 per cent) and TVS Motor Company (up 0.1 per cent) were among the top gainers.
The Nifty Auto index was trading 1.96 per cent down at 10180.0 around 01:21PM.
Benchmark NSE Nifty50 index was down 268.35 points at 14762.6, while the BSE Sensex was down 942.69 points at 49849.39.
Among the 50 stocks in the Nifty index, 9 were trading in the green, while 41 were in the red.
