The S&P BSE Sensex index fell rose as much as 150 points to touch 51,269.88 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty50 benchmark fell to as low as 15,402.55, down 20 points from its previous close.
Analysts awaited more earnings announcements by India Inc for cues.
ITC was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up 1.90 per cent.
, Asian Paints, Grasim and Airtel were among other blue-chip top performers.
On the other hand, M&M was the top laggard, down 6 per cent.
, IndusInd Bank, Coal India and L&T were among other losers.
Asian shares edged higher on Monday, but gave up their gains as all eyes are set on US jobs figures showing the expected revival in hiring in May and keep the global recovery on track. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up by 0.20 per cent.
Overnight on Wall Street, the three benchmark indices ended higher. Dow Jones gained 0.13% to 34,529.45. The S&P500 gained 0.08% to 4,204.11, while Nasdaq advanced 0.09% to 13,748.74
Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices climbed in early trade with Brent futures up 7 cents, or 0.1%, to $68.79 a barrel.
