Chip shortage hurt Jio, Airtel user additions in August

Kolkata: Chip shortage hit mobile phone subscriber growth for India’s top two telcos – Reliance Jio and Bharti – in August, with both showing muted additions compared to previous months.

Reliance Jio added 0.65 million wireless customers in August, taking its gross mobile user base to 443.86 million, while Airtel’s rose only by 0.13 million to 354.19 million, according to latest subscriber data issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday. In July, Jio added 6.51 million wireless customers, while Airtel added 1.94 million.

Vodafone Idea once again lost 0.83 million customers in August, shrinking its total mobile user base to 271.06 million, indicating the cash-strapped telco’s continuing inability to effectively combat its two stronger rivals. It, though, lost fewer customers, compared to 1.43 million in July. India’s overall mobile user base also dipped by 0.11 million in August to around 1.186 billion.
