sensex and nifty today: Sensex falls in early trade, Nifty slips below 15,700; IOB, Central Bank drop 2% each

NEW DELHI: Domestic equity benchmarks started Tuesday’s session on a weak note amid selling pressure in financial stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex index fell as much as 200 points to touch 52,353.25 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty50 benchmark fell to as low as 15,691.35, down 61 points from its previous close.

was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up 1.96 per cent. Asian Paints, Shree Cements, Power Grid and IOC were among other blue-chip top performers.

On the other hand, was the top laggard, down 1.82 per cent. ONGC, BHDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank were among other losers.

and Central Bank dropped 2 per cent each in early trade.

Equities in other Asian markets were trading lower. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan traded 0.19 per cent lower.

Overnight on Wall Street, the three benchmark indices plunged up to 2 per cent. Dow Jones tanked 2.09% to 33,962.04, while S&P 500 declined 1.59% to 4,258.49. Nasdaq shed 1.06% to 14,274.98

Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices were trading firm with Brent futures up 38 cents, or 0.6 per cent, to $69.00 a barrel. US crude for September delivery was up around 1 per cent at $66.99 a barrel.
