Bajaj Auto (up 0.53 per cent) and Maruti Suzuki (up 0.12 per cent) were among the top gainers.
Mahindra & Mahindra (down 2.78 per cent), Ashok Leyland (down 2.53 per cent), TVS Motor Company (down 2.41 per cent), Amara Raja Batteries (down 1.84 per cent) and Tata Motors (down 1.78 per cent) were the top losers on the index.
The Nifty Auto index was down 1.16 per cent at 10191.55 at the time of writing this report.
Benchmark NSE Nifty50 index was down 144.7 points at 15607.7, while the BSE Sensex was down 441.95 points at 52111.45.
