sensex and nifty today: Sensex gains in early trade, Nifty above 15,850; Equitas Holdings surges 8%, SPARC drops 4%

NEW DELHI: Domestic equity benchmarks started Tuesday’s session on a strong note amid buying interest in bank and metal stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex index rose as much as 172 points to touch 53,024.70 in the first few minutes of trade, and the broader NSE Nifty50 benchmark climbed to as high as 15,881.55, up 57 points from its previous close.

was the top Nifty50 gainer in early deals, up nearly 2 per cent. Hindalco, JSW Steel, and were among other blue-chip top performers.

On the other hand, Wipro was the top laggard, down 0.6 per cent. Axis Bank, Nestle, Airtel and HDFC were among other losers.

Equitas Holdings surged 8 per cent, while SPARC dropped 4 per cent in early trade.

Equities in other Asian markets rose in early trade. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up by 0.13 per cent.

Overnight on Wall Street, the three benchmark indices settled higher. Dow Jones gained 0.24% to 35,144.31, while S&P 500 rose 0.24% to 4,422.30. Nasdaq added 0.03% to 14,840.71.

Meanwhile, in the oil market, crude prices inched up on tight supply with Brent futures up 13 cents, or 0.2%, to $74.63 a barrel at 0128 GMT, extending a 0.5% gain on Monday. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 4 cents to $71.95 a barrel, after losing 16 cents on Monday.
