Shares of Jindal Steel & Power (up 7.91 per cent), Tata Steel (up 5.01 per cent), Steel Authority of India (up 3.91 per cent), Hindalco Industries (up 3.81 per cent) and National Aluminium Company (up 3.19 per cent) were among the top gainers.
While APL Apollo Tubes (down 0.78 per cent) was the sole loser in the index.
The Nifty Metal index was trading 3.4 per cent up at 3587.85 around 02:40PM.
Benchmark NSE Nifty50 index was down -2.80 points at 15311.9, while the BSE Sensex was down -62.67 points at 52091.46.
Among the 50 stocks in the Nifty index, 24 were trading in the green, while 26 were in the red.
